No matter how much a player leads a tournament by, when there’s a stepladder finals there’s always one more match to win to claim a title. The old saying is you have to win the tournament twice.
Most famously (or perhaps infamously), Dave Davis led the PBA Tour tournament in Palatine, Illinois, in 1980 by 770 pins but lost the title match to Mike Aulby.
