As I've written before, my 90 Clean at the 1997 USBC Open Championships (then the ABC Tournament) was a complete non-issue while I was bowling.
I did not even know I did it until I was being interviewed after having taken the all-events lead and we were going over my scoresheets.
There were no clean frame pots and it was something no one paid attention to. And no one at ABC had heard of anyone doing it before.
And so the myth was born.
I had always stated that I have the only 90 Clean that anyone knows of but that it doesn't mean I for certain have the only one.
A couple of days before we left for the 2011 Open Championships last week, I got a call from Pete Tredwell, USBC managing director of media, telling me that USBC had determined that I was not the only 90 Clean.
(I'm just finding the time to write this now.)
Through the years, he said, some had made claims of having 90 Clean but none had been confirmed when checks were made — until someone associated with legendary Hall of Famer Larry Laub said he had done it in 1998 in Reno and USBC was able to confirm it.
Laub shot 2,095 all-events that year, Tredwell said, which was 57 pins shy of Chris Barnes winning total.
I told him it was an honor to have my name alongside one of the greatest stylists and champions in anything bowling related!
Tredwell said that USBC has computer scoring records going back to 1996 and an exhaustive search found one other 90 Clean: by Mike McPherson, also in 1998, and in a 2,014 all-events total.
I don't believe I know McPherson but congrats to him as well.
USBC doesn't have the scoring records prior to 1996. Individuals did get scoresheets back to 1979 in Tampa when automatic scoring was first used for the tournament. So if anyone has sheets showing 90 Clean they can prove it and be added to the list.
But prior to 1979, scoring was done by humans at the tournament standing above the lanes and only the games were recorded.
So there is no definitive way to prove whether there were 90 Cleans in the first seven decades or so of the tournament.
So all that can be said is that there have been at least three 90 Cleans at the tournament, but there may be more.
That's still a pretty exclusive club, and one I am no less proud to be part of then when I was said to be the only one.
And in case anyone is wondering after watching my spare shooting this year, I have my scoresheets from 1997 and all nine games on video!
USBC didn't wish to make any statement — they're just happy to have the record set as straight as it can be. As am I.
Obviously, USBC records will be corrected and a corrected banner or no banner will be displayed at the tournament starting in 2012, Tredwell said.
