The 65-year run of the popular Chippewa Valley Match Games is over (again) ... at least for one year.
On Sunday, tournament director Denny Burkhart sent out an email announcing the cancellation that said host center Wagner’s Lanes of Eau Claire had scheduled another event on its dates.
Denny’s son Pat Burkart messaged me shortly after I posted a story Monday morning saying the tournament was on and that the cancellation announcement was due to a misunderstanding. So I deleted my story and made a post explaining the situation.
But on Wednesday morning, Pat Burkart made this post on Facebook:
"It is with regret that we announce that the 2025 edition of the Chippewa Valley Match Games has been unavoidably cancelled. We hope to be able to resurrect this tournament in the future.
It was a difficult, but an economically motivated decision. Thank you for your support of this tournament in the past.
Good Luck at State and Nationals.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Denny, Pat, Skip & Barb"
Nick Heilman won the 2024 Chippewa Valley Match Games, as I detailed in this story.
The 2024 tournament drew 94 entries, eight more than 2023. There were 85 in 2022, 106 in 2021, and a range of 119 to 134 from 2016 through 2020.
