As I detailed in this story, after giving away $250,000 in scholarship funds, the Sean Yonan Memorial weekend of events ended a 15-year run in March 2021 with two tournaments.
The events honored Keith’s son Sean Yonan, who died from complications of a severe asthma attack in 1995.
With inspiration from the Yonan Memorial, Dale Elliott, proprietor of Dale’s Weston Lanes in Weston, and his crew have created the Midwest Bowl Fest, a true extravaganza of bowling that is a more than worthy successor to the Yonan Memorial weekend.
Over the span of Oct. 12-15, the 60-lane center outside of Wausau will run a series of tournaments and events for men, women and youth of all levels, and supporting the Jason Elliott Foundation.
The tournament announcement says the Jason Elliott Foundation “was established to honor a charismatic young man who loved life, his family, friends, taking care of others, and especially bowling! He died tragically in an automobile accident in 1995 at the age of 16. The foundation looks to continue his legacy by serving the youth in central Wisconsin through what he loved most; snowmobiling, hunting, and bowling.”
The events include:
Adult and individual group lessons on Thursday and Friday with Mike Shady, Team USA assistant coach and PBA Tour and USBC Open Championships champion.
A meet and greet and adult-youth pro-am on Friday featuring PBA, PBA50 and PWBA Tour champions Steve Jaros, Eugene McCune, Kevin McCune, Tom Hess, Shady, Lennie Boresch Jr., Diana Zavjalova, Daria Pajak, and Lindsay Boomershine, and PWBA Tour rookie and TV finalist Carlene Beyer. Elliott said more names will be announced once he has commitments secured.
The Badger Elite ($3,000 first), Badger Elite Ladies ($1,700 first), and Badger Youth tournaments starting with qualifying on Saturday.
Update: The Badger Elite has been changed so it is open to all bowlers, including PBA Tour players. Kevin McCune appears to be the only player impacted by the decision as the other PBA pros are seniors.
Webcast finals for all of the events on Sunday.
A Storm Youth Doubles and a sponsor fun night.
Details are in the flyers attached to this story, and at the Midwest Bowl Fest website. You can create an account at the site to enter the tournaments.
Sponsors for the event include Storm, Village of Weston Tourism, Wausau USBC, Bobs' Business, Kegel, QubicaAMF, Kwik Trip, and 11thFrame.com.
