Guest column: What is BowlU and what does it offer? by Allen Levet

This website has always been open for guest columns that bring value to bowling topics of interest, and BowlU is one to me. It's an intriguing mystery for those who don't pay to access it, rightly so because who would give away their proprietary information for free? I've long been fascinated by how devoted BowlU followers are when I've interviewed them after, for example, winning an Eagle.

This guest column is written by Allen Levet, who Brad Angelo describes this way: "A huge BowlU supporter and team member for the past few years. Prior to Allen diving into BowlU, he had been to many other places searching for information that made sense. Since then, through BowlU, he has evolved and has developed a thorough understanding of the sport of bowling. Over the past year, he has been a major resource for many of the pros: Kris Prather, Cody Shoemaker, Richie Teece, Sam Cooley and Jason Sterner are in regular contact with him, even during and throughout PBA events. Allen is in the process of becoming one of BowlU's lead presenters.

What is BowlU and what does it offer?

By ALLEN LEVET

What is BowlU? As BowlU’s reputation has grown to the public’s eye, this question gets asked a lot more often. The simplest way I can explain BowlU is that it’s 50 years of knowledge and experience that is being packaged so bowlers don't have to take 50 years to accumulate the knowledge themselves. Right now, it typically takes a bowler about 20 years to gain the experience that it takes to compete at an elite level. BowlU wants to help bowlers shorten this learning curve. We want to provide a resource where bowlers of all skill levels, in every part of the industry, can go to learn. From teaching the physical game at the base of the pyramids in Egypt to teaching the Athletic Aura in France, BowlU has been able to touch the lives of bowlers across borders and skill levels.

It’s hard to talk about BowlU without talking about its founder, Rick Benoit. Rick is one of the most creative minds that I’ve met. He started BowlU because he didn’t want it to be “Rick Benoit’s Coaching.” His philosophy was that any individual’s legacy would pass with time, but as a team, the knowledge he acquired could be passed onto future generations. So he aimed to build a team that could continue on long after his time in the industry would have passed. Through his experience in Pro Shops, being a ball rep on the PBA Tour, and being an international coach, Rick was able to develop methods of teaching without words. Don’t misunderstand, he can fill a room with words. But as BowlU crossed borders, the language barriers had to be overcome. So non-verbal challenges and visuals became a regular part of how BowlU teaches the sport.

Now, I was asked to write this article by BowlU’s lead instructor, Brad Angelo. Brad is a two-time PBA National Tour Champion, he was PBA Rookie of the Year in 2002-03, and continues to be a dominant player on the PBA50 Tour. The competitive experience, passion for the sport, and  genuine love he has for each person that seeks help from him and BowlU, makes Brad an exceptional teacher. Brad’s best quality is his gift of empathy. He’s able to put his mind in a place where he can genuinely and deeply feel the emotions of whoever he’s talking to. I believe this helps him connect with people on a deeper level, and really helps them learn. Each person is just that, a person, not a number.

Most bowlers are interested in the coaching philosophies of BowlU, because they want to improve their own scores and results. So we can talk about the pins, the optical illusions, lane play and ball motion, transition, the physical game, or any of the hundreds of things most bowlers want help with. It’s true that helping bowlers with these things can help their performances. However, the best part of giving bowlers an experience that you can currently only get from BowlU, is how much respect and appreciation they have for the sport and its challenges.

How can BowlU help you? Whether you’re a recreational bowler, a professional bowler, a pro shop operator, a coach, a tournament director, or anyone else in the industry, BowlU is a resource for you. Want a better understanding of the sport? We can help. Want a simpler way to help your customers understand ball motion? We can help. Want competition formats that indisputably prove who the best in the field was? We can help.

What’s next for BowlU? Currently we have online learning resources being updated, training tools being produced, and training camps coming up. We are also continuing to be a resource to some of the PBA tour players (Kris Prather, Cody Shoemaker, and Jason Sterner to name a few), as well as other aspiring bowlers.

If you get the opportunity to experience what BowlU has to offer, I can’t recommend it enough. After experiencing BowlU, you’re bound to leave with a greater appreciation of our sport and the opportunities it can provide. Whether you’re coming to a weekend camp, going through the online courses, or using the hand-poured training tools, you’re bound to see the sport differently. BowlU. For All the Right Reasons.
