E.J. Tackett led the 2022 U.S. Open by 502 pins, only to get routed in the title match 232-165 by Anthony Simonsen. As I wrote in this story, Tackett put himself in illustrious company with that lead and loss: Earl Anthony led the U.S. Open by 578 pins in 1979 and 551 pins in 1980, only to lose both title matches, and fellow legendary Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. led the U.S. Open by 537 pins in 1993, only to lose the title match.
