The 11th Frame: Spink wins InsideBowling.com Open in hometown

Daniel Spink of Florissant, Mo., won the 2012 InsideBowling.com Open laast weekend at Crest Bowl in that St. Louis suburb.

Spink defeated defending champion Jake Peters 433-390 in the two-game title match to take the $5,000 top prize.

Rather than steal the thunder of my colleague Mike Flanagan, please read all the details in his excellent story here. It includes links to full results and the archived webcasts of the competition.

In our trip back from the USBC Hall of Fame inductions in Texas, my girlfriend Sue and I stopped in St. Louis Friday night through Sunday morning and I sat in on the live webcast for B Squad on Saturday. (I didn’t bowl because I proved last year that I am too old to survive Flanagan’s grueling format, this was a non-bowling vacation trip, and I needed to get back on Sunday well before I would have if I had made the cut to Sunday.)

And it was quite an experience as that squad was delayed for a couple of hours by the wrong lane condition being applied twice!

To his credit, Flanagan did the only thing he could do by having the lanes re-oiled until the correct pattern was on every lane. There was no other choice in a multiple squad format.

The field was filled with talent, from veteran Hall of Famer Pete Weber to recent USBC Queens TV finalist Josie Earnest to great young players like Peters and Brad Miller, who finished third.

This should be a can't miss tournament for any serious Midwest bowler who can handle it.
